Open Source Leader Further Expands Multi-Platform Availability with Early Support for Windows on Intel Itanium 2 Processor
MySQL AB, developer of the world's most popular open source database, today announced that it has ported the MySQL® database to the HP-UX 11.i v2 operating environment on the Intel® Itanium® 2 processor. MySQL 4.0, the current MySQL production version, now includes support for 64-bit Intel Itanium 2 processor-based systems running in both the HP-UX and Linux environments. MySQL is also showcasing early support for the Windows operating system on the Intel Itanium 2 processor in MySQL 4.1, the current development version of the MySQL database software.
“The MySQL database on an Intel Itanium 2-based platform is a smart formula for yielding value and performance from heavy-duty applications,” said Alastair McKeeman, technical director, Intel EMEA. “Software developers, IT managers and solution providers now have the option of using this popular, high performing database with the Intel Itanium 2 processor using HP-UX, Linux or Windows.”
HP-UX on Intel Itanium 2 adds to the wide range of platforms the award-winning MySQL database supports, including other HP-UX platforms, IBM AIX, Sun Solaris, all major Linux distributions, Mac OS X, Novell NetWare and Microsoft Windows, among others. MySQL’s extensive platform support gives users choice and flexibility to deploy MySQL in the most cost-effective and appropriate environment.
"Developers can now build high performance MySQL database applications that take advantage of Intel's powerful 64-bit Itanium 2 architecture with many different operating systems,” said David Axmark, MySQL AB co-founder. "MySQL on the Itanium 2 processor is a good solution for maximizing the value and performance of robust applications, and it underlines the flexibility and portability of the MySQL code base for a wide range of platforms."
HP-UX 11.i is a highly available, secure and manageable operating environment that can meet the demands of business-critical computing end-to-end. The Intel Itanium 2 processor is uniquely designed for handling terabytes of data with high performance achieved through 64 bits of available address space. MySQL on the HP-UX/Itanium 2 platform is ideal for gaining high performance in Web-based, enterprise and technical database applications that require large amounts of data.
"The MySQL database can support resource intensive applications with speed and stability for a low total cost," said Juha Hellman, partner business manager at HP. "We are happy to announce that now, MySQL users can enjoy the combination of the MySQL database, stability and scalability of the HP-UX operating system, and high computing power provided by HP's extensive range of Itanium 2 -based systems."
MySQL 4.0, the latest production version, and MySQL 4.1, the latest development version, can be downloaded at the MySQL AB Web site at www.mysql.com/downloads. MySQL development version releases are intended for testing and evaluation by MySQL’s large user community.
