Prestigious "Golden Mouse" Awarded to MySQL for Technical Innovation and Market Impact
SEATTLE - (January 16, 2003) - MySQL AB, developer of the world's most popular open source database, today announced that the MySQL™ database has won the prestigious Swedish Guldmusen or "Golden Mouse" award for Swedish IT Product of the Year. The Golden Mouse award is given by two of Sweden's most prominent magazines, Affärsvärlen and Computer Sweden, in cooperation with IT-företagen, Invest in Sweden Agency and Comdex Scandinavia.
The Golden Mouse for Swedish IT Product of the Year is awarded to a product that is technologically advanced and has reached market success as well as received attention beyond the Swedish borders. It can be hardware, software, or a combination of both.
According to the award sponsors, the MySQL database was selected for the top honor because, "Through developing an open source code and smart technology, MySQL has become one of the world's most widespread databases in a very short time period."
"The Swedish Golden Mouse award is one of the most significant IT awards in Scandinavia, and we are extremely honored to have received this accolade, especially since it is given on the basis of both technology excellence and market influence," said Mårten Mickos, MySQL CEO.
Selected by a jury, the Golden Mouse winners were announced this week at Comdex, Scandinavia's biggest IT trade show. This year, there were three nominations in four categories.
[Translated] "The time is right for products based on open source. It feels good to award a Swedish product that has achieved significant international recognition," said Torbjorn Johansson, director of technology at IBM and a Golden Mouse jury member, who handed over the prize.
MySQL AB develops, markets and supports the MySQL database server, the world's most popular open source database.
