When a decision had to be made on which database backend to use for Ericsson Telebit's intranet application suite consisting of such widely dispersed applications as personnel administration, CMS, Time registration, accounting systems, and more, the choice was easy.
Webmaster Peter Binderup had already experienced the speed and stabilty of MySQL when working for a major Internet Service Provider, and the easy installation as well as easy portability across platforms were important factors in the choice. Much of the development was done in Windows, then moved to a Linux server for deployment. "The move of the MySQL server and data was totally seamless", says Binderup.
"Quite a few web developers for the Internal Ericsson sites work primarily on Unix servers, and MySQL seems to perform the best and is one of the easiest to install", says Binderup, "MySQL is used by people at all levels of our organization."
The development of all the services took three man-months. "The MySQL server functions exactly as expected, and there were no unexpected "surprises" during the development. I would have no problem recommending MySQL to anyone needing a RDBMS, whether they're setting up a new application suite or considering a more cost-effective alternative to their current solutions", concludes Binderup.
