MySQL AB, developer of the world's most popular open source database, announced that the MySQL database has been named by the Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA) as the winner of the 2004 Codie Award for Best Open Source Product. The Codie award adds to several recent MySQL accolades, including being named for the second year in a row to both the SD Times 100 list and as Product of the Year by Developer.com.
SIIA, a principal trade association for the software and digital content industry, announced the Codie award winners at the 19th annual awards ceremony on Tuesday, May 18, 2004 at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco, Calif. The Codie Awards is one of the industry's most prestigious and recognized awards programs, showcasing the finest companies, products and services in the software and information industry.
Representatives from the trade press, mainstream technology writers and experts in education technology selected this year's 44 Codie winners from an initial pool of over 800 nominations from more than 600 companies. SIIA members' votes play a significant role in determining the winners, giving the Codie Awards the distinction of being the only peer-recognition awards program of its kind in the industry. Ken Wasch, president of SIIA, said, "SIIA congratulates MySQL AB on winning a 2004 Codie Award in a new category with first-rate competition. This 19th Annual Codie Awards continues our tradition of celebrating the best products in the software and information industry. Being a winner among so many fine nominees is a solid achievement. I congratulate all of the companies."
For nearly 20 years, Codie awards have been given to visionary companies that have shaped the software industry, and we are especially honored to be recognized in the first year that open source software has its own Codie category, said Zack Urlocker, MySQL AB vice president of marketing. This award underscores the momentum of open source software and reinforces MySQL's commitment to create high performance, high value database software and serve as a model for a successful open source business.
