NEC Leverages MySQL Commercial Licensing Option to Embed, Distribute Leading Open Source Database
MySQL AB, developer of the world's most popular open source database, today announced that NEC America, Inc. (NEC), the second largest provider of customer premise communications systems in North America, has selected the MySQL® database to power the newest version of its Global Navigator management information system. The open source MySQL database serves as the underlying data management software for Global Navigator Release 5.0, which runs on the open source Linux operating system. Global Navigator 5.0 is now available.
Global Navigator is a complete turnkey monitoring system for tracking call activity and agent performance across single or multiple contact center operations, delivering enterprise-wide contact center management. The MySQL database is a high performance database management system (DBMS) for developing and deploying Web, enterprise, or commercial applications. In NEC's Global Navigator, MySQL is the central data management hub that stores and manages all calling activity and other vital statistics.
"NEC's new Global Navigator leverages two leading open source technologies, MySQL and Linux, to meet customer demand for an open, flexible, high performance management information system," said Mike Rosen, general manager of NEC's Marketing Sales and Support Division. "With excellent performance and a streamlined architecture, MySQL gives Global Navigator the power to easily handle large amounts of data from multiple contact centers, all in a cost-effective product design. With MySQL on Linux, we can pass the benefits of proven, enterprise-ready open source products to our customers.
"NEC's selection of MySQL to power a major commercial product for the enterprise is an example of the strong trend we are seeing today - that market-leading companies are relying more and more on MySQL as the data storage engine for critical pieces of their business and products lines," noted MySQL AB CEO Mårten Mickos. "Fueling this trend is MySQL AB's dual-licensing business model that gives organizations the freedom to deploy MySQL in both open source and proprietary products, for use internally or to resell."
MySQL AB employs a "dual-licensing" business model where the MySQL database is available at no cost under the free software/open source General Public License (GPL), and MySQL also provides commercial licenses that are backed by MySQL AB. With the availability of the commercial license option, leading companies such as NEC America can develop and distribute MySQL-based applications without opening the source code. MySQL's dual-licensing structure supports its open source user community with a sustainable business model, and this community, in turn, is the engine behind the company's commercial business.
"MySQL is a good example of a next-generation open source company, with a profitable business that is also fully in line with open source philosophies and practices," said Charlie Garry, research analyst at the META Group. "The dual licensing model is becoming a blueprint for a successful open source business."
MySQL AB develops, markets and supports the MySQL database server, the world's most popular open source database. With an estimated 4 million installations and over 35,000 downloads per day, MySQL is quickly becoming the core of many high-volume, business-critical applications. Major corporations such as Yahoo!, Lucent Technologies, Sony Pictures Digital Entertainment, Motorola, NASA, HP and Xerox rely on the ultra-fast, highly reliable MySQL database. MySQL is available under the free software/open source GNU General Public License (GPL) or a non-GPL commercial license. For more information about MySQL, please go to www.mysql.com.
