KIEV, UKRAINE - (February 27, 2003) - MySQL AB, developer of the world's most popular Open Source database, today announced a Russian-language version of the MySQL reference manual, which is now available online at the MySQL AB Web site at www.mysql.com.
The MySQL (TM) database is a high-performance relational database management system for Web site and business application development and deployment. With over 4 million installations, MySQL is one of the most widely-used databases in the world.
"MySQL is finding an ever larger acceptance in enterprises and with software vendors," said Michael "Monty" Widenius, MySQL AB CTO and the main developer of MySQL. "While continuing to focus on serving our biggest customers better and better, we also want to do our best to make life easier for the countless MySQL community users and contributors across the world who use, test, suggest code and support MySQL in so many ways."
"Starting with MySQL 4.1," continued Widenius, "the MySQL database will support Unicode international character sets, making it easier to store and manipulate internationalized data -- a feature incidentally coded by our MySQL developer team in Izhevsk, Russia. In addition, we have supported koi8-r, koi8-u, windows-1251 and most other important character sets for years, thereby acquiring a large user base in most countries. Having personally visited MySQL users in Russia, the Ukraine and Belarus, I am happy to now be able to offer them our documentation in Russian."
The Russian translation of the MySQL reference manual was done by MySQL partner Ensita.NET, an independent team of designers, programmers, project managers and qualified testers specializing in Web development. Ensita.NET has been a MySQL AB partner since January 2002 and has provided expertise to the MySQL user community by monitoring and answering questions on the MySQL general mailing list. For more information on Ensita.NET, visit http://www.ensita.net/.
"I started contemplating the task of translating the MySQL documentation into Russian when I first met MySQL management in Kiev over two years ago," recalls Egor Egorov, Ensita.NET CEO and project coordinator. "The actual work started in the autumn of 2002, and I am happy that the result is now available for use by the large and growing community of Russian-speaking MySQL users. My hope is that we will soon be able to offer the book on paper as well."
In addition to the new Russian-language version, the MySQL reference manual is also available in English and German, with French and Portuguese to be added later this year.
"The reference manual translations to German, Russian and other languages are the result of dedicated professionals who continue to commit a significant amount of time to enhancing and adding translations in support of the diverse, international MySQL community," commented Kaj Arnö, MySQL AB vice president in charge of documentation.
Reference Manual Offers Comprehensive MySQL Overview
The MySQL reference manual is targeted at all MySQL users, including developers of large Web sites and other mission-critical systems as well as those who are embedding the high-performance MySQL database engine into other products. It provides information on everything from installation and basic SELECT syntax, to ACID transaction support, row level locking, replication of servers to security, performance and optimization issues. The manual is searchable and has a table of contents on each page for easy navigation.
An English-language hard-copy book titled, "The MySQL Reference Manual" is published and distributed by O'Reilly & Associates in the United States and is available through most major booksellers. A complete German-language version of the MySQL reference manual is also available through German publisher MITP.
The Russian version of the MySQL reference manual is copyrighted by MySQL AB but is available for free browsing on http://www.mysql.com/doc/ru/. The manual copyright protection does not allow printing or online hosting of the manual without an agreement with MySQL AB, but personal use of the information on the Web site is not limited.
