Creating Applications with MySQL on Mac OS X Now Easier with New Binary Installer
MACWORLD EXPO, SAN FRANCISCO - (January 7, 2003) - Today at Macworld Expo, MySQL AB, developer of the world's most popular open source database, announced that a MySQL binary installer in ".pkg" format, the standard for software installation on Mac OS X, will be available in February from the official MySQL Web site at www.mysql.com.
Developers have successfully been creating Web, enterprise and embedded database applications using MySQL in the Mac OS X environment for more than two years. In addition to being shipped with Apple's Mac OS X Server, open source developer Marc Liyanage has been providing MySQL binary installers in .pkg format through his independent Web site at www.entropy.ch. Through a partnership with Liyanage, MySQL is building on the tools and scripts Liyanage developed to offer the MySQL .pkg binaries for Mac OS X on the MySQL Web site. After a brief transition period when these packages will be available from both sites, MySQL will be the sole provider of MySQL for Mac OS X .pkg binary installers at www.mysql.com.
"With Apple's embrace of open standards in its UNIX-based Mac OS X platform, interest from the developer community for creating MySQL-based applications for the Mac has never been stronger," said David Axmark, MySQL vice president of open source relations and co-founder. "By making available MySQL .pkg binaries for Mac OS X directly from our site, we're making it even easier for developers to create powerful database applications on Mac OS X."
"The combination of powerful hardware and standards-based software is proving a hit with developers who want an affordable industrial strength development environment," said Ron Okamoto, Apple's vice president of Worldwide Developer Relations. "MySQL is a powerful tool for data management included with every copy of Mac OS X Server and is increasingly used as the data management engine for Mac OS X applications, often in conjunction with other open source software such as Apache, PHP and Perl."
The MySQL database is a high-performance relational database management system for Web site and business application development and deployment. With over 4 million installations, it is one of the most widely-used databases in the world.
The MySQL .pkg binaries for the Mac OS X 10.2 ("Jaguar") and Mac OS X 10.2 server will be available at http://www.mysql.com/ in February of this year. Until then, they can still be downloaded at http://www.entropy.ch/software/macosx/mysql/.
MySQL AB develops, markets and supports the MySQL database server, the world's most popular open source database. With an estimated 4 million installations and 27,000 software downloads per day, MySQL is the de facto open source database leader and is quickly becoming the core of many high-volume, business-critical applications. Major corporations such as Yahoo!, Lucent Technologies, Sony Pictures Digital Entertainment, Motorola, NASA, SiliconGraphics, HP, Xerox and Cisco rely on the ultra-fast, highly reliable MySQL database. MySQL is available under the free software/open source GNU General Public License (GPL) or a non-GPL commercial license. For more information about MySQL, please go to www.mysql.com.
