VIENNA -- December 4, 2009 –- Sun Microsystems today announced Cashpoint, the Austrian betting and gaming company, has selected Sun's MySQL™ database to manage its customer, Web, and results data. In order to protect its systems' high-availability, Cashpoint uses both a MySQL Enterprise™ Unlimited subscription and the MySQL Cluster database product. Employing an enterprise-wide MySQL Enterprise subscription along with MySQL Cluster contributes to considerable cost savings for the company.
"Cashpoint searched for a stable and low-administration database environment to optimize our performance levels, maintenance times, and availability demands," said Thomas Schlink, System Administrator, Cashpoint Agentur & IT Service GmbH.
MySQL Cluster is a real-time open source relational database designed for fast, always-on access to data under the toughest conditions. The MySQL Cluster architecture has been designed for 99.999% availability and linear scalability of both database reads and writes, in order to handle the most demanding and unpredictable workloads. Cashpoint's database cluster consists of four data and SQL nodes, in addition to two replication and standby nodes -- resulting in significant performance and scalability gains.
"The cost/performance ratio of the overall solution was the decisive factor in switching to a MySQL-based solution," Schlink explains. "Besides annual license savings of € 250,000, Cashpoint has also reduced server costs by € 150,000 and labor costs by € 90,000."
Cashpoint makes extensive use of the MySQL Enterprise Monitor to manage its MySQL servers. Thanks to this tool, the company's database administrators are able to track valuable information on the health of both individual database servers and the overall database environment. The MySQL Query Analyzer tool has also been used to recently optimize database queries, therefore delivering even higher levels of performance. Cashpoint has also benefited from Sun's MySQL professional training and consulting services, enabling them to make a smooth transition to their new database environment.
"With Cashpoint, we have a customer with whom we harmonize perfectly, because the innovative technology of both companies inspires their clientele," points out Thomas Kaiser, Manager Systems Line of Business Austria, Sun Microsystems.
